Highway department announces two projects

State highway officials have unveiled a plan to address safety at the US 27-Ky. 70 intersection in Eubank.

The low water crossing on Ky. 1247 should be reopened in four weeks.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet s (KYTC) District 8 Office announced two projects this week affecting drivers in northern Pulaski County.
The first is already underway. Starting Thursday, the project to replace a low water crossing on Ky. 1247 between Science Hill and Eubank began with demolition of the bridge.
A low water crossing provides a roadway over a stream and can quickly become impassable when the stream rises.
The crossing over Pitman Creek (mile point 18.089) closed on January 14 following a statewide load rating analysis of select steel culverts. KYTC bridge preservation engineers determined the closure necessary due to deterioration of the steel pipes and insufficient supporting material above them. ....

Library to offer another online stargazing program this week

The public is urged to attend a family friendly online hosted by the Ontario Community Library this week regarding Natural Night Skies.
During the short presentation, officials will share a couple of local winter night sky constellations and stars.
Attendees are urged to a notebook handy, then go outside after the talk to see it for themselves.
Sammy Castonguay, with Friends of the Owhyee will be the presenter. He has taught astronomy at Treasure Valley Community College since 2016. He is passionate about Natural Night Sky conservation and the OregonOutback Dark sky Network.

BRAMWELL â A longtime downtown landmark is getting the money needed to help stabilize its structure and get it on the road to restoration and serving the public again.
The Preservation Alliance of West Virginia announced this week that the Pence Hotel in Mercer County, and the Wyoming Hotel in nearby Wyoming County, are this yearâs first recipients of its Saving Historical Places Grants. The program is the Allianceâs initiative to save historical places in the Mountain State by funding emergency stabilization work and jump-starting building preservation project ....

LDS Church removes murals from iconic Salt Lake Temple

In a blow to preservationists and many Latter-day Saints, historic murals in the iconic Salt Lake Temple some that were painted by Mormon artists sent to study in Paris in the 1890s have been removed during the ongoing renovation and will not be returned.
The same extraction also is planned for the pioneer-era Manti Temple, which houses one of Mormonism’s artistic gems a “world room” mural painted by the famed Minerva Teichert, who studied at the Chicago Art Institute in the early 20th century.
This is being done in part because officials in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints decided to eliminate the “live endowment,” in which templegoers move from room to room in a symbolic-rich reenactment of the creation, Adam and Eve’s expulsion from the Garden of Eden, and humankind’s mortal journey and ultimate return to God’s presence. ....
