LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – The community got a chance to weigh in on the future of Fire Station No. 4 on Gillette Street.
A public hearing hosted by the Heritage Preservation Commission was held at the South Side Neighborhood Center Thursday evening.
The city originally planned to tear down the 80-year-old building and develop a new, modern station.
But in early March, the Preservation Alliance of La Crosse put together a petition, making its case for why the station should be designated as a historic site. ....

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) The Heritage Preservation Commission of La Crosse is hosting a public hearing at 6 p.m. Thursday to talk about whether La Crosse Fire Station 4 on Gillette Street should be designated a historic site.
The future of the 80-year-old building has come into question after the city made plans in 2018 to demolish it and replace it with a facility that better suits the fire department’s needs. Earlier this year, the Preservation Alliance of La Crosse circulated a petition to save the building, repurposing it in a way to retain its historic significance. ....

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WXOW) - The City of La Crosse is taking steps towards designing a new Fire Station No. 2 near the UW-La Crosse campus.
To do that, the city council approved shifting nearly $6 million from a plan to rebuild Station No. 4 next to the current building on the northside as well as use $1.2 million in funds leftover from renovations to Station No. 1 and other projects for Station No. 2.
The council decided to wait for the result of an effort by the Preservation Alliance of La Crosse which is seeking historical status for Station No. 4 before undertaking any work around the building. ....

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) Replacing Fire Stations No. 2 and No. 4 continues to spark fireworks among La Crosse Common Council members, including an often-volatile debate Thursday night.
After a lengthy kerfuffle during a Zoom meeting, the council voted 8-4 to adopt an amended resolution to proceed with replacing Station No. 2 with a new building on La Crosse Street this year but put Station No. 4 on hold pending a decision on its proposed historic designation.
The resolution also approved moving ahead with an extensive remodeling of Fire Station No. 1, including the second-floor bathroom, locker room, and bunkrooms. ....

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) A group dedicated to preserving historic architecture in the La Crosse area has a plan to preserve Fire Station No. 4 while still getting the La Crosse Fire Department a new station on the same block.
Preservation Alliance of La Crosse on Thursday released its plan, which PAL President Barbara Kooiman called a “win-win” solution. The plan was developed with help from architect Roald Gundersen. ....
