MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - The Alabama legislature passed a bill Thursday to name a portion of U.S. Highway 80, from Selma to Montgomery, after the late civil rights icon and congressman, John R. Lewis.
According to HJR 100, sponsored by Rep. Prince Chestnut (D- District 67), the historic length of highway will be named “The John R. Lewis Memorial 10 Highway.” After Gov. Kay Ivey adds her signature to the bill, signs, and markers will acknowledge the highway’s name distinction.

Alabama state legislature passes bill to name part of highway after John Lewis


The legislation will go to Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey

The bill, sponsored by Alabama state Rep. Prince Chestnut (D), recognizes Lewis’s leadership in the civil rights movement, including his role as one of the 13 original Freedom Riders who participated in protests against the segregation of public bus terminals. 
The bill also recounts Lewis s service as “Chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and his leadership of over 600 peaceful protestors across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma where he was brutally attacked by Alabama State Troopers on March 7, 1965, a day known as Bloody Sunday.” 
Michael Starr Hopkins, founder of the John Lewis Bridge Project, commended the bill’s passing in a statement, saying the bill moved the state “one step closer to ensuring the legacy of John Lewis will live on for generations.”  ....

House Judiciary Committee approves repeal of Habitual Felony Offender Act


The Alabama House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday voted to repeal the state s Habitual Felony Offender Act after a heated debate between two members about what the bill would and would not do to enhanced sentences. 
The bill, sponsored by Rep. Christopher England, D-Tuscaloosa, got approval on a 9-5 vote, with Democrats and Republicans voting to approve the bill. It goes to the full House for consideration. 
It changes the sentencing scheme for courtrooms across the state when dealing with an offender who has multiple offenses, England said. On the other end of the spectrum, it also creates the opportunity for those who have been incarcerated for a very long time as a result of habitual offender, and yet it doesn t guarantee the release, but it gives them the ability to have their sentences reviewed. ....
