The Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA) has appointed Helen Campbell as its new director of strategy, performance and assurance.
As the head of the government s project-delivery system, Campbell (pictured) will be responsible for driving cross-government and industry collaboration, as well as pushing improvements in project delivery, the IPA said. The authority aims to achieve this with better benchmarking data and by gathering independent assessments on project delivery.
IPA chief executive Nick Smallwood said: With the publication of the National Infrastructure Strategy and the government’s commitment to build back better, it has never been more important to consistently deliver our major projects successfully. ....

Skanska-led coalition criticises 'vague' construction climate targets

The new report from a coalition led by Skanska has criticised vague carbon-reduction targets, which could undermine the construction industry s efforts to reach net-zero emissions.
The report, titled
Is our carbon wallet empty?, claimed there are wide variances in forecasting carbon usage and called for common data standards, reporting structures and changes in design.
The study takes the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) to task for not including any assessment of the carbon generated by construction associated with infrastructure investments when it reviewed its recommendations in light of new national net-zero targets. The Infrastructure and Projects Authority (IPA) was also criticised for not providing an annual update of the infrastructure pipeline in 2019 and instead just covering planned public procurement within a single financial year. ....

Kingspan invests in green steel firm

Kingspan CEO Gene Murtagh
Materials company Kingspan has announced an investment in H2 Green Steel, which manufactures steel using hydrogen.
The insulation specialist is investing an undisclosed sum in the company and said in a statement that it expects to be a single-digit minority shareholder. Swedish-based H2 Green Steel is carrying out an equity fundraising round.
H2 Green Steel’s production process replaces coke and coal with green hydrogen to achieve an almost totally CO2-free steel product. The hydrogen used in the process will be produced by electrolysis using electricity generated from hydropower and wind power at its production site in northern Sweden. According to the company, its process reduces CO2 emissions compared with that associated with traditional blast furnaces at steel makers by around 95 per cent. ....
