Montreal tenants offered compensation to move into more expensive apartments

MONTREAL
A community group in Montreal s Cote-des-Neiges borough says some landlords are trying to get tenants paying low rental rates to move into more expensive units.
The warning comes following what Project Genesis describes as an unusual offer to tenants at two buildings on Bourret Ave. in Snowdon.
Tenants say they received a flyer offering two options: accept a payment of $3,500 and give up their lease, or $6,000, have their apartment renovated and sign a new lease at what in many cases amounts to almost twice their current rent.
“I have never seen a notice like this, said Margaret Van Nooten of Project Genesis. “I’ve seen many notices that I would say are outrageous, but I have never seen one like this.” ....

NDG tenants wonder if they're the latest victims of renoviction

MONTREAL
Tenants at an NDG apartment believe they might be victims of another so-called ‘renoviction,’ and have been ordered to leave their building for more than half a year.
They were informed their landlord has to do urgent repairs, but some feel the landlord is trying to get rid of the tenants to jack up the rent.
Victory Hegedus and her daughters have been living in the apartment on Chester Avenue for six years.
“We re very attached it s a community here. The kids go to school here, we know everybody in the building,” she said.
At less than $820 per month rent, she said it s by far the best she can afford in the area. ....

Carl Marshall appointed leader of County Durham Labour group

Cllr Henig will remain leader of Durham County Council until the annual meeting of the council on May 26 when the new leader will be unveiled.
It is understood Cllr Marshall will now have the role of working with other parties and councillors to determine how power will be shared.
Helen Lynch, head of legal and democratic services, said: “The leader of the council is appointed by elected members at the annual meeting of the council.

Bungalows for older people may not be available as rental homes

DEVELOPERS have said much-needed bungalows being built on a former steelworks site may not be available to rent by older people because of the ‘inflexibility’ of council planners.
Project Genesis, which is redeveloping the land, has permission for 30 two-bedroomed bungalows as part of a 400-home Regents Park scheme behind the Tesco store in Consett.
The firm varied the conditions to make them available for sale because of a lack of interest from social landlords.
But now Karbon Homes has got involved and agreed to offer 25 of the properties for rent.
Durham County Council has said the subsequent adoption of the County Durham Plan, which concludes there is already enough rented accommodation in the town, means they cannot go back to being leased. ....
