Liquefaction map to help with consents as subdivision refused east of Blenheim

A subdivision consent for a Hardings Road property near Blenheim has been refused due to flood and liquefaction risk.
New information about Marlborough’s liquefaction risk is expected to help clarify rules for people looking to build east of Blenheim.
Mapping of liquefaction-prone land must be finished by all councils by November 28, as part of changes to the Building Code bringing in regulations already used in Canterbury following the Christchurch earthquakes.
Buildings on liquefaction-prone land will need particular types of foundations, and new builds must be designed to withstand liquefaction, under the new regulations. The mapping is expected to help councils, building consent authorities and engineers make consistent decisions. ....

Resident's 'mushroom cloud' picture becomes evidence in bid to block bay burnoff

Supplied
A consent battle over a burn pile at Duncan Bay has led to this photograph of the smoke being submitted as evidence.
New environment rules mean a group of Marlborough Sounds residents have had to get permission for the joint burnoff they’ve been doing since the early 1980s.
The move has prompted a small group of disapproving residents in Duncan Bay to try to block the green waste fire, due to environmental concerns including smoke in their “pristine” community.
And a social media post from one of the property owners backing the burnoff has become a last-minute submission from opponents. ....

A third of Marlborough rivers have high faecal contamination

The worst sampled was Blenheim s Doctors Creek, with more than half its attributes falling below the national standard, including an ‘E’ for E Coli – a bacteria which indicated there was faecal matter in the water.
To be given this grading, Doctors Creek’s faecal bacteria count exceeds the safe swimming levels more than 30 per cent of the time.
Contaminants were likely coming from farm animals, ducks and maybe humans, according to a report from an environment meeting last month.
The creek was also the only one to return high scores of phosphorus. The chemical was a favourite of algae, encouraging it to grow and suck up oxygen, which suffocated fish and sometimes led to toxic blooms. ....

Planning For The Future Of Marine Farming

The public consultation process closes on 26
February 2021.
Variations 1 (marine farming) and 1A
(finfish farming) to the environment plan were publicly
notified in early December. This came after two years of
work by the Marlborough Aquaculture Review Working Group
(MARWG). The MARWG included members of the marine farming
industry, Marlborough Sounds’ community organisations and
central government agencies. The Ministers of Fisheries,
Conservation, Environment and Transport, along with Te Tau
Ihu iwi were also consulted.
Planning, Finance &
Community Committee Chair Councillor Mark Peters encouraged
anyone with an interest in marine or finfish farming, or the
Marlborough Sounds, to make their views on the proposals ....
