Cambridge mosque vandalism not a hate crime: WRPS


 
CAMBRIDGE
After charges were laid in connection with a vandalism incident at a Cambridge mosque, the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS) now says there s no evidence the act was a hate crime.
On Saturday, police announced charges against a 35-year-old Cambridge man, including break and enter, property damage over $5,000, possession of stolen property as well as Controlled Drug and Substances Act offences.
But on Sunday, a spokesperson for WRPS said the incident isn t being deemed a hate crime.
The evidence does not support the inference that the crime was motivated by racial or religious hatred, the spokesperson said in an email. ....

Waterloo region police are investigating after what they re calling a Zoom bombing hateful online comments made during an online vigil Tuesday evening for the Muslim family in a fatal attack in London, Ont., this week.
The online vigil began about 6 p.m. ET Tuesday and was organized by the Coalition of Muslim Women of KW (CMW), which said more than 800 people attended. ....

Report hate incidents online, by phone, text or WhatsApp with new portal

The coalition of Muslim Women of KW has launched an online reporting tool for people who witness or experience incidents of hate or discrimination.
People in Waterloo region are encouraged to document incidents involving racism, Islamophobia or Xenophobia, said the organization s executive director.
Fauzia Mazhar hopes the tool will help people understand the scope of the issue in Waterloo region and where it s happening. 
When we have that information, we can also focus on problem solving, said Mazhar. ....
