Ed Forry photo The Boston Licensing Board voted last week to allow the newly expanded Pat’s Pizza, 2254 Dorchester Ave., to serve beer, wine, and liqueurs, if a license from a closed restaurant shows up soon. Owner Patrick Newell said Pat’s, which recently re-opened, hopes to begin attracting an evening crowd with its current 34 seats. In response to the question of the public need for an alcohol license at the location, Newell said that if more people come into Lower Mills to eat in the evening, it will bolster the area by showing the new diners “what a great area Lower Mills is.” ....

While other restaurants in other parts of the city got the green light for outdoor dining to start on March 22, the city postponed the start for North End eateries because of concerns about COVID-19 concerns in the densely populated neighborhood. Last year, the launch of outdoor dining in the North End was not without headaches for residents and restaurant owners. The Boston Licensing Board had an emergency meeting to address the issues and warned restaurants and bars to follow social distancing and other public health requirements. ....

Boston s outdoor dining program will begin on Monday, March 22 10 days earlier than had originally been planned due to the weather forecast, Mayor Marty Walsh announced Friday. But the city s North End has to wait until April 1, according to the Boston Licensing Board, which cited high density for the delay. The Boston Licensing Board said because of the neighborhood’s high density and impact to the community, customers will not be able to dine outdoors until April 1. News of the delay comes after Mayor Marty Walsh announced last week that the city was moving the timeline up for the Boston outdoor dining season to March 22. Ben, who lives in the North End, said he has mixed feelings about the delay. It s both good and bad it s hard for the restaurant owners and I wish it could come back sooner but ultimately we have to do the right thing, he said. My hope is that the weather gets warmer they can reopen outdoor dining sooner and they can take some of the parking on Salem and Hanover Streets and that way they can get some of that capacity back. ....
