This year, on 9 May, as India observes International Mothers’ Day in the midst of a fresh wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is critical to draw attention to the issue of child marriage and teenage pregnancy. With lockdowns due to COVID-19 disrupting women’s access to reproductive health services, it is more critical than ever to protect girls from early pregnancy, which can pose severe physical and mental health risks to adolescents.
While popular culture glorifies motherhood, it fails to consider the struggles of adolescent mothers who have yet to reach physical or mental maturity. The central government on April 23rd decided to resume providing free food grains to 80 crore poor beneficiaries in May and June to help them tide over the economic hardship in the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, a move that would cost the exchequer around Rs 26,000 crore.
We will provide 5-kg additional food grains for free to PDS beneficiaries under the PMGKAY for two months May and June. This time, we are not providing pulses under this scheme, Food and Public Distribution secretary Sudhanshu Pandey told PTI. ....

A UNICEF report states that over 80 percent of adolescents suffer from ‘hidden hunger’. The goal is to meet the intergenerational nutrition gap through various Government schemes
The WHO in its nutrition factsheet states that “Maternal and child under-nutrition is a largely preventable cause of more than 3.5 million deaths annually, accounting for 35 percent of the disease burden among children under 5, and 11 percent of the total global disease burden.” And some of these statistics in India can be linked to the intergenerational nutrition gap that is prevalent in the country today.
The discourse on how to improve the nutrition of our people, especially mothers, is not new. Neither is it bereft of the attention of international and national stakeholders who are working towards addressing the issue. ....
