View Comments More than $28 million in new money is coming to Greater Lansing schools following the approval of a historic state K-12 funding bill. The bill will help close a district funding gap, an effort that started with the 1994 approval of Proposal A, which replaced property taxes with state taxes as the main source of school funding. The bill means an increase in base funding from $8,100 per student in some districts to $8,700 per student in all schools. The bill will bring millions of dollars in extra funding to Greater Lansing schools as they rebound from a year of remote learning amid COVID-19 concerns. Lansing School District alone could see more than $4 million in new state education funding. ....
After a school year filled with frequent interruptions and changes, Livingston County schools are expanding their summer education programs to address learning gaps. With the state shutdown last spring, student quarantines and virtual classes, some students struggled more this year than before. Class failure rates were higher compared to previous years, said Tim Dowker, assistant superintendent and curriculum director at Fowlerville Community Schools. Dowker said Fowlerville has extended the number of weeks for summer school classes and is offering more small-group and one-on-one summer school programs for elementary school students. Several districts noted a difference in performance between virtual and in-person students. Dowker said the failure rate among virtual students was notably higher. ....
May 5, 2021 By Jessica Mathews / [email protected] Although it was close, voters turned down a $37.8 (m) million bond proposal in Tuesdayâs special election that would have funded a new building and various improvements throughout the Fowlerville Community Schools district. Unofficial election results for Livingston County, which included two precincts for Ingham County, were in by 8:25pm. Those unofficial results showed the proposal failed by 33 votes with 13.82% local turnout. The final results were held up by one precinct in Antrim Township in Shiawassee County, which didnât report results until 10:19pm. Out of 130 registered voters there, 10 cast ballots â with 5 voting yes and 5 voting no. ....
Fowlerville Community Schools $37.8 million bond proposal failed on Tuesday by 33 votes. According to Livingston County s unofficial election results, 1,771 people voted. The bond proposal was the only issue on the ballot. The proposal received 869 yes votes and 902 no votes in Livingston County. Ten votes were cast in Antrim Township in Shiawassee County, with 5 yes and 5 no. Voters in the school district who lived in Ingham County voted at the Conway and Iosco Township halls, so their votes were counted in Livingston County. The school district was hoping to build a new elementary school and install air conditioning in existing buildings beginning next year. ....
