New superintendent's contract is approved 5-1 with a $255,000 salary

LAKELAND Incoming Polk County Public Schools Superintendent Frederick Heid was on the job Wednesday afternoon as he transitions into the position after the School Board voted 5-1 Tuesday night to approve his contract.
School Board member Lynn Wilson did not attend the meeting because he is self-quarantining with COVID-19 symptoms. Kay Fields was the lone dissenting vote.
Her opposition, she said, was not against Heid she successfully lobbied her colleagues to vote unanimously for him but that his $255,000 salary is $17,000 more than outgoing Superintendent Jacqueline Byrd’s $238,000 salary.
“I believe wholeheartedly in gender equity,” Fields said. “It sends a very poor message in my part of the world to have an incoming male making more than a departing female.” ....

Polk County Public Schools new superintendent's contract includes $255,000 salary

BARTOW – Incoming Polk County Public Schools Superintendent Frederick Heid said he wants to be treated like any other school administrator when it comes to salary and health insurance.
The Polk County School Board will vote on Heid’s contract at Tuesday night’s board meeting, which includes a salary of $255,000 and health insurance for Heid, but not his wife and son he will cover the cost for their insurance just like school employees do for spouses and children.
“I’ll pay for it – I pay for it now,” Heid said during a Monday morning phone call. “It’s something I’m accustomed to. It’s a fairness – you re modeling (behavior). I m not better than anyone else in the organization.” ....

Parents' group wants Polk County School Board to revoke mask requirement

He also said the School Board has not listened to the recommendations from top state officials, including Gov. Ron DeSantis, Commissioner of Education Richard Corcoran, and Florida Department of Health State Surgeon General Dr. Scott A. Rivkees, instead opting to listen to doctors recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization.
State government officials have recommended removing masks, and the governor has ordered county and city lawmakers not to institute any more emergency orders. Doctors with the CDC and WHO have recommended continued mask use.
The school district, however, is not ignoring anyone.
Its last meeting was April 27, nearly a week before the governor rescinded emergency orders put in place last year at the start of the worldwide pandemic. Showdown looming between anti-mask group and Polk School Board

BARTOW The Polk County School Board is facing a showdown Tuesday, when more parents and students plan to demand a mask-free option on campuses across the district beginning immediately, with one Facebook group calling for a day of protest with less than three weeks of school left.
“The student code of conduct face covering policy requirement implemented by the PCSB should be brought to a vote and rescinded at the May 11 regular meeting,” the group No More Mask Mandate for Children stated on its private Facebook page last week.
The School Board voted unanimously last summer to add the mask mandate to the student code of conduct after listening to a panel of doctors from Nemours Children s Hospital, Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center and the Florida Department of Health’s Polk County office. According to new U.S. Census data, over a two-year period, Polk County is one of the fastest growing areas in the entire country.
