Sixteen months after former Police Chief Mike Koval’s abrupt retirement in Sept. 2019, the Madison Police Department swore in its new police chief, Shon Barnes. In his speech at the swearing-in ceremony, Chief Barnes outlined his blueprint for the MPD, pledging to prevent violent crime, reduce arrests for low-level offenses, protect employee wellness and engage with the community. “This is arguably one of the most challenging times for law enforcement in history,” Barnes said. “And while some are abandoning the profession, are approaching our challenges with cynicism, I am more than ready to embrace the challenges with open arms, an open heart and, most importantly, an open mind.” ....

Feb 1, 2021 MADISON (WKOW) Madison s new police chief was sworn in at a ceremony inside the City-County building Monday morning. Dr. Shon Barnes took over as head of the Madison Police Department around 10 a.m. Madison s Police and Fire Commission voted to offer Barnes the job by a vote of three to two. Following a rigorous, comprehensive process and after thorough deliberations, the PFC has selected Dr. Shon F. Barnes to be our Chief of Police, the commission said in a statement. As is standard practice, the PFC will now be issuing a Conditional Offer of Appointment. Barnes was most recently the Director of Training and Professional Development for the Civilian Office of Police Accountability in Chicago, Illinois. ....
