A veteran Missouri lawmaker who’s finishing her 16th and final year in Jefferson City is most proud of her successful team effort to prevent the Bellefontaine Habilitation Center in her district from closing.

The facility is operated by the Missouri Division of Developmental Disabilities, which is part of the state Department of Mental Health (DMH). State Sen. Gina Walsh, D-Bellefontaine Neighbors, notes former Governor Matt Blunt (R) and some others proposed closing the facility in 2005. ....

Larry was born in Portage Ville, Missouri in the family barn to Heck and Nadine Yardley. He grew up around the Poplarbluff and Freemont areas. When he was 12 the family moved to Nucla, Colorado. He graduated eighth grade in Nucla soon after going to work in the uranium mines to help support the family and help raise his younger siblings after his father was killed in a mining accident in Nucla, Colorado. In 1961, he met Paula Smith. They were married in October 1963. To that marriage they had three children: Deborah (Norm) Hall, Barbara (Boyd) Millsaps, Lonnie (Heidi) Yardley; eight grandkids, numerous great grandkids and numerous nieces and nephews. ....
