The use of jet-powered snow removal equipment in B.C. apparently didn t end with an experimental plow developed by the province’s transport ministry years ago.
While that machine quickly was scrapped for being a tad unstable, it was out-done by CN Railways.
Chris Mayhew used to worked for the company as a mechanic and he recalls working on that railway s jet-powered snow blower.
That unit is powered by a surplus jet engine out of a B-52 bomber.
According to Boeing, the Pratt & Whitney turbo fan engine could produce up to 17,000 pounds of thrust. ....

Power outages persist through afternoon the day after B.C.'s first winter storm

VANCOUVER
Tens of thousands of homes are still without power as of lunchtime Tuesday after strong winds and snow swept across B.C. on Monday, the first day of winter.
As of 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, BC Hydro says it has restored power to 85 per cent of its 223,000 customers affected by the snow storm.
“BC Hydro crews continue to make good progress and have restored power to 190,000 customers of the 223,000 customers impacted by the snow storm on Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, the Lower Mainland and the Southern Interior,” reads a statement from the company.
BC Hydro said crews worked through the night to restore power to about 130,000 customers across Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and the Lower Mainland who were impacted by the storm. During the morning on Tuesday, crews worked to restore power to about 60,000 more customers. ....

Ferry cancellations, road closures, power outages as storm sweeps across B.C.

VANCOUVER
Snow, strong winds and heavy rain wreaked havoc across southern B.C. Monday, causing ferry cancellations, power outages and road closures.
BC Ferries posted a service notice in the afternoon announcing it had cancelled all sailings between the Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. Officials said they expected service to resume Tuesday morning as scheduled.
The difficult weather also cut power to some 15,000 BC Hydro customers across the Lower Mainland, including about 4,000 in the White Rock area who lost service after trees fell onto power lines. Another 2,600 lost power in Langley due to the snow storm, which BC Hydro said caused additional challenges for crews trying to restore service. ....
