Boardman gets 2 new firefighters | News, Sports, Jobs

Trustee Brad Calhoun said the fire department went down to 37 due to retirements last year.
“We waited and asked all our departments to hold the line,” Calhoun said. “When we got a better idea of where we were (financially), we gave the go-ahead to begin a search.”
He said Ian Murray and Brandon Gilmore stood out. They began work three weeks ago with the promise to swear them in this month.
Murray, 36, has been a member of the armed forces for close to 19 years. He received his firefighter II and EMT-basic certification from Cuyahoga Community College. Along with wife Ashley, Murray lives in Tallmadge and works part- time for Springfield Township Fire Department. ....

ORCHID: To the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County for hiring a community support specialist who will help patrons with needs in social service and mental health areas. Jim Young will help people with needs greater than library services; he will link patrons to help with homelessness, addiction, depression and more, according to library Executive Director Aimee Fifarek. ORCHID: To the American Red Cross of Greater Akron and the Mahoning Valley, which includes the former local Lake to River Chapter in Liberty, for finding a centralized location to best serve residents in its six-county region. The Red Cross is moving its office from Belmont Avenue in Liberty to Canfield Niles Road in Austintown on Monday. There will be no disruption in services. Supermarket delivers land as promised | News, Sports, Jobs

BOARDMAN A donation made to Boardman Township will allow for undeveloped land to stay in its natural state.
Township Administrator Jason Loree said the approximate 20 acres are located behind the new Meijer building on U.S. Route 224.
Meijer previously purchased some 40 acres, and developed nearly half with the intent to donate the remaining portion to the township, Loree said.
A conservancy is attached to the remaining part of the land, which means it cannot be developed.
“This is something Meijer said they would do when they were building, and they are doing just that,” Loree said.
In the future, the land could be transferred to the ABC Stormwater District “to further protect that property from any future development,” Loree told trustees. ....

Funds secured to expand flood plain | News, Sports, Jobs

BOARDMAN Funding for the demolition of four homes in Boardman Township now is secured.
By tearing them down, the plan is to help reduce localized flooding, said Marilyn Kenner, township road superintendent.
A little more than $800,000 in grants have been awarded for the homes at 230 and 241 S. Cadillac Drive, and 230 and 233 Wildwood Drive.
Appraisals of the houses were approved for the Federal Emergency Management Agency grants, which will cover costs for the purchases, demolitions and regrading of each propery located within the Cranberry Run water course.
Once the homes are gone, the properties will be graded and become a two-stage channel so water stays put within the area rather than flooding adjacent homes. ....
