The owners of a hotel on the popular North Coast 500 tourist route have revealed plans to covert a “dilapidated” barn into guest rooms to meet rising demand for accommodation.
The Borgie Lodge Hotel, near Tongue in Sutherland, typically attracts more visitors than it can handle as more and more people sample Scotland’s answer to Route 66.
Owners Nigel and Andi Carter took ownership of the venue in 2018 and have worked tirelessly to rebuild the business from the ground up. ....

Elizabeth Margaret Guthrie Mackay, or ‘Babe’ as she was better known, was born at the Old Post Office, Skerray on November 15, 1934.
The oldest of her five siblings had been born in the warmer climes of South Africa where her father, a baker with Robert Garden and Sons at their premises near Skerray Pier, had emigrated in a fit of pique when his request for a rise of a penny an hour had been denied. ....

Three North Coast organisations are joining forces to push forward with a community buy-out of one of Sutherland’s most historically significant sites.
North Sutherland Community Forest Trust (NSCFT) is linking with Bettyhill, Strathnaver and Altnaharra Community Council and Strathnaver Museum to progress the purchase of Rosal pre-clearance village and a surrounding area of woodland in Strathnaver.
Trust director Tim Curtis said the partnership had some exciting ideas for Rosal. ....
