Postmaster General Louis DeJoy described problems and defended the work of the U.S. Postal Service during testimony Wednesday before a House committee in Washington.The postmaster general said fundamental changes are needed to strengthen the postal service.The 11 News I-Team has reported on the complaints from Marylanders about delays in mail and package delivery and the responses from the U.S. Postal Service.Members of the House Oversight and Reform Committee heard from DeJoy directly. There is difficult work that is ahead of us to fix systemic problems that have plagued the postal service, DeJoy said.DeJoy agreed that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic led to a surge in packages during the holiday season. He said he is proud of the dedicated employees who worked tirelessly under the most trying of circumstances. During this peak season, we fell short of meeting our service targets. A Parkville man keeps getting notices from the U.S. Postal Service informing him that letters and bills are coming to his mailbox soon, but he hasn t received any mail in days.Greg Kump said he can t understand why there are so many delays with his mail delivery. Where do they store all of this mail? They must have a huge spot to put all this mail in, Kump said. It s a lot of extra money and extra hassle to paying your bills on time. It s a huge inconvenience. Kump said he s paying extra money to avoid late fees on his mortgage and other bills all because of postal delays. He said he hasn t received mail in 10 days.According to messages and pictures from the U.S. Postal Service, mail for him and his wife will be coming to their mailbox soon, including notices from Social Security and state vehicle emissions, also a Christmas card.Members of Maryland s congressional delegation are again asking the postmaster general for answers. First it was packages and mail deliveries, now Marylanders tell WBAL-TV 11 News they re facing another problem related to the post office: The receipt and payment of their bills.Some Maryland residents say they have long run out of patience with the backlog of mail and packages being handled by the U.S. Postal Service, but still wonder when Christmas presents and other items they ordered will be delivered.The Postal Service says its employees are doing everything they can to get the mail and those packages delivered, but a 78-year-old Dundalk woman said she is extremely frustrated. She declined an interview because she s afraid of the words she might use. The loading dock at the Dundalk post office is busy as workers move packages from bins to trucks. Roxanne Enders was also there at the post office.“I haven t got mail in the last three days at the house. That s frustrating,” Enders said.She was also there in November to get mail she said had not been delivered in weeks.� ....
