The U.S. Navy Had a Secret Master Plan for a 'Super Battleship' (Like This)

The U.S. Navy Had a Secret Master Plan for a Super Battleship (Like This)
The U.S. Navy planned for the Montana-class to be the successors to the powerful Iowa-class battleships, and as such would have been larger in nearly every respect: longer, wider, with greater displacement, and three more 16-inch guns.
Oh, what could have been.
The U.S. Navy planned for the Montana-class to be the successors to the powerful Iowa-class battleships, and as such would have been larger in nearly every respect: longer, wider, with greater displacement, and three more 16-inch guns.
Such a design was made possible due to the United States’ Naval Act of 1938, which mandated a massive 20% increase in American naval strength in response to the German annexation of Austria and the Japanese invasion of China. The act freed the Navy from the design restrictions imposed by the Washington and London Naval Treaties that placed strict limits on naval construction after World War I in orde ....

"Sink the Bismarck!" The Epic Battleship Search That Shook The 7 Seas

On May 23, 1941, the Battleship
Bismarck was on a roll. The largest and most powerful ship in the German Navy, the mighty
Bismarck had broken out into the Atlantic Ocean, sunk a Royal Navy battlecruiser, badly damaged a battleship and was poised to add its guns to a naval blockade that threatened to strangle Great Britain.
Ninety-six hours later, heavily damaged, the battleship was on the bottom of the North Atlantic.
Bismarck’s swift reversal of fortune was the result of a heroic effort by the Royal Navy to hunt down and destroy the battlewagon, and avenge the more than 1,400 Royal Navy personnel killed in the Denmark Strait. ....

Warship Mystery: How Did This Battleship's 16-Inch Gun Explode?

Navy leaders hoped they would not have to answer questions about the underlying causes of the disaster.
Here s What You Need to Know: The military often looks for scapegoats when people die rather than admit their mistakes.
It s been over 30 years since an explosion inside the number two gun turret on the USS
Iowa killed 47 American sailors, but for Mike Carr, it still feels like yesterday.
I knew all 47 guys inside that turret because as part of the ship s policy we had rotated between all three turrets, Carr, who served as a gunner s mate in the Iowa s aft 16-inch turret, told Task & Purpose. We all knew each other rather intimately. ....
