EDWARDS Addressing a crowd that filled the gymnasium Saturday at Battle Mountain High School, author Lance Witt said that words seem hollow when remarking on the death of a 20-year-old who impacted the lives of hundreds.
But as Witt and others learned in preparing for the celebration of life for Addison Smith, the beloved local left behind plenty of her own words from which to draw inspiration for the event.
Smith was a Battle Mountain High School Class of 2019 graduate who completed two years of college at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. She was killed in a car accident June 30 while returning from Lake Powell with her family and friends.

Eagle County School District announced Monday that Jason Mills was selected as the interim principal for Battle Mountain High School in Edwards for the 2021-22 school year.
Mills previously served as the head of school for Stone Creek Charter School, an independent K-8 school with three campuses across the county. Prior to that, Mills spent more than 10 years with Eagle County Charter Academy, serving in a variety of capacities, including teacher, team leader and governing board director.
“We’re excited to welcome Jason to Battle Mountain High School and the interim principal role,” Superintendent Philip Qualman said. “He brings considerable leadership experience to this position and is eager to contribute.”

Over $400,000 in scholarship funds were awarded to 29 high school seniors from across Eagle County at the Vail Valley Foundation’s annual YouthPower365 Dollars for Scholars event Tuesday evening.
At this year’s event, students from five of the county’s high schools were recognized for their academic accomplishments, community involvement and leadership during a dinner and awards ceremony.
This year’s recipients represent a variety of futures and dreams, pursuing degrees and careers in everything from hospitality, engineering and public policy to neuroscience and sports medicine.

Eagle County’s effort to provide COVID-19 vaccinations in the Roaring Fork Valley is getting high marks from people who successfully navigated the system but the process hasn’t worked well for all.
The county has established a vaccination clinic at the Eagle County office building adjacent to Crown Mountain Park to serve its constituents in El Jebel, Basalt and surrounding areas. Vaccines are offered every other Thursday.
