Patrons prepared not by fastening their tuxedo cuff links but by downloading an app; the ribs bourguignon were served not piping hot in the War Memorial Opera House halls but reheated in the microwave after home delivery.
Yet there we were on Thursday, Jan. 14, for the opening gala of San Francisco Ballet’s 88th season, connected through our computer screens. There were the dancers, some with their spouses, in little Zoom boxes at virtual “tables,” free to socialize because their performances had been prerecorded. ....

Helgi Tomasson, the longtime artistic director and chief choreographer of San Francisco Ballet, announced his intention to retire from the dance company in 2022. Here is a chronology of his life and career:
1942: Helgi Tomasson born Oct. 8, in Reykjavik, Iceland.
1957: At age 15, Tomasson begins his professional career with the celebrated Pantomime Theatre in Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens. ....

Helgi Tomasson will step down as artistic director and principal choreographer of the San Francisco Ballet by June 2022, the company announced Wednesday, Jan. 6. The move will put the seal on nearly four decades of artistic leadership that has helped propel the ballet company to the forefront of the dance world.
Since being named to the position in 1985, Tomasson, 78, has been hailed for his success at combining excellence in the classical ballet repertoire with a spirit of artistic innovation and the development of new work. Tomasson alone has created more than 50 dances for the company, as well as commissioning work from a wide range of contemporary masters and developing artists. Growing up in Antioch during the 1940s and ’50s, Jeanne Rose heard about San Francisco Ballet’s production of “Nutcracker,” but her family never made the trip into the city to see it. In 1968, she purchased a pair of balcony tickets to take her 4-year-old daughter, Amber, to a performance of the beloved story ballet. Rose still recalls her first time seeing the production’s Christmas tree expand until it filled the opera house stage. ....
