For more than an hour, the Everett City Council appeared to have been taken over by Martians, aliens or the lollipop kids – with technical issues taking over the meeting and making every councilor and presenter appear to have a very high-pitched and electrified voice. It was nothing new for the Council, which had experienced numerous technical difficulties over the last year when holding meetings at City Hall, but it was unexpected as the body had moved to the School Committee Chambers in Everett High School. The School Committee has met there successfully for months with no issues, but on Monday the system went awry. It evoked the best of Buck Rogers, Lost in Space, or maybe Dr. Who, as everyone sounded quite strange and outer-space like. ....
A privately-funded group running on the vision of Everett’s Kayla Mangan will open their doors next Tuesday, June 1, as the first LGBTQ+ Youth Space and Resource Center in the former Pope John High School. Dom Washington told the Independent they plan to have a soft opening this summer with hours to be determined, but that a full slate of programming and hours will start in the fall. The space will be celebrated with a ribbon cutting on June 1 following the Pride Month flag raising at City Hall. Washington said the space comes from the vision of long-time resident Kayla Mangan, who wanted to create a space where young people could feel safe and get resources they need. That’s something that was not available for Kayla growing up in Everett, Washington said. ....
The rain didn’t stop Mayor Carlo DeMaria or more than 150 of his supporters from hosting an enthusiastic opening of his 143 Main Street campaign office last Saturday, April 17, announcing the campaign focus to be ‘Everett for Everyone’ – a slogan that was colorfully painted on the front window of the campaign office last week. In an emotional speech to a large crowd, Mayor DeMaria said he wanted the campaign to be a grass-roots effort with himself and supporters hitting the streets and neighborhoods to talk to residents in a COVID-safe manner about the issues in the City. He stressed that the campaign would focus on inclusivity and Everett’s long past of welcoming new residents in a melting pot – proclaiming the campaign to be “Everett for Everybody.” ....
Not one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine went to waste last weekend at the second City of Everett and Cataldo Ambulance vaccination clinic in the former Pope John High School. The effort was able to vaccinate 386 seniors that were 75 and over, as well as the new categories of those 65 and over, having two co-morbidities or are living in senior congregate homes. “On Saturday we had another successful COVID-19 vaccine clinic at Pope John,” said the mayor. “The Everett Board of Health successfully vaccinated 386 eligible individuals with the assistance of Cataldo…We have another clinic scheduled for this Saturday Feb 27. These appointments are all booked, but we may be opening up additional spots. ....
