On 'Good Uses' for the Confederate Battle Flag

One of my colleagues in the ministry of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS) recently wrote that among “good uses” for the Confederate battle flag are “diaper, shop rag, kindling, stuffing for a pillow, burping cloth,” and “toilet paper.”  In the ensuing discussion – which I was not a part of – he added, “It’s a treason/slavocracy flag.  Plain and simple.  It’s the revisionists that have a complete lack of understanding of history.” Fortunately, this kind of churlish and disrespectful rhetoric is not common among my brethren in the ministerium. But it is a helpful window into how much our education system and culture have degraded.  There was indeed a time when the movie

Listening to History: Songs of the Civil War and What We Can Learn

Listening to History: Songs of the Civil War and What We Can Learn Throughout American history, our wars have either popularized or produced songs that remain familiar to us today. The American Revolution brought us many songs, but only “Yankee Doodle” has stood the test of time. Sung to an old tune and written originally as a song of English derision aimed at Americans during the French and Indian War, patriots of the Revolution took the song for their own, changed the words, and proudly played and sang it in their encampments. “Yankee Doodle” remains the state song of Connecticut.

Ludlow (Mo) News for Feb. 13

Marj Locker NAMES GIVE PERSONALITY. One of our strongest memories growing up is our first vehicle. It may not have been the greatest vehicle, but it was ours! Many of us feel such a connection to our cars and trucks, that we name them, giving them a personality! I did a little online survey asking people to share why and what they named their vehicles. Ellen Donoho named her orange Jeep Mrs. Magoo, after the little car that cartoon character Mr. Magoo drove. “I can’t see and neither could Mr Maggo,” added Ellen. “My 4-Runner is named Dimples because she was caught in a hailstorm years ago and not all the dents came out,” explained Doloris Tompkins.
