Jacques Damas, the chief executive of Eurostar, could not believe his eyes. After weeks of discussions with the British Government, Grant Shapps was on his computer screen snuffing out any hope of help.
“We don’t actually own this company,” the Transport Secretary told a parliamentary committee on Feb 3. “It is not our company to rescue.”
Shapps’s junior, rail minister Chris Heaton-Harris, had been making positive noises about stumping up British taxpayer cash to avert a catastrophe, insiders say. But here the message was definitive: Eurostar was on its own. ....

EasyJet pins hopes on summer after posting heavy loss
The low-cost airline says it can flex its schedule to ramp up flights for the peak summer season

EasyJet has revealed widened half-year losses and expects to fly only around 15pc of its pre-pandemic flight programme until the end of June, despite international leisure travel restarting this week.
The low-cost airline reported underlying losses of £701m for the six months to March 31, against £193m a year ago.
It added that while capacity would still be only around 15pc of 2019 levels in its third quarter, it expects to ramp up its programme from June onwards to meet pent-up demand . ....

Britons should be able to fly to the United States by mid-August, according to an executive from one of America’s biggest airlines. 
Scott Laurence of JetBlue said: “The corridors should be open based upon the data that we’re seeing right now. And we’re confident that by following the science by using the data that we’re going to see the US move to green.”  ....
