Nine Syrian sailors held for two years now freed

Nine Syrian seafarers confined aboard a general cargo vessel since 2019 have been flown home.
Another nine, including the master of the vessel Abdulah Aldech, travelled back home after assistance by family on diverse dates in 2020.
The nine left through Moi International Airport, Mombasa on Friday aboard an Ethiopian Airline flight en route Lebanon via Addis Ababa and then connect to their homeland.
International Transport Workers Federation, Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA), Mission to Seafarers and local seafaring community facilitated the repatriation.

Report highlights modern slave labour in Pacific fishing industry
A new report has found that fishing companies operating in the Pacific are doing little to stop slavery on their boats. The tuna industry in particular is rife with allegations of modern slavery in its supply chains, with few protections for workers against forced labour.
The Business and Human Rights Resource Centre report,
All at sea: An evaluation of company efforts to address modern slavery in Pacific supply chains of canned tuna, surveyed dozens of the world’s largest canned tuna brands. It concluded that while more than four in five have published statements on human rights, this “doesn’t translate” into efforts to end slavery. ....

Disproportionate effects of Covid-19 on Women
It was noted by the ILO in late February that the data was abundantly clear that the COVID-19 pandemic had had a disproportionately negative impact on women. It was further noted that, “because more women work in the tourism, retail, and informal sectors, which have been hardest hit by the pandemic, their livelihoods have been upended. Understanding the extent of this impact is the first step in reversing course. Yet the pandemic has also exposed and exacerbated data gaps that undermine our ability to act intentionally and craft effective policy responses.”
