PIERCEFIELD â The state Department of Environmental Conservation is lowering water levels at the lower Bog River dam to access and repair a dam leak. Water will be lowered on the downstream side of Hitchens Pond in the town of Piercefield. The leak is at a concrete training wall above the auxiliary spillway, and the water will be lowered at least as low as the auxiliary spillway crest by using two wooden sluice gates to the left of the spillway. The gate on the lower dam road is currently closed for mud season. DEC anticipates that after the water is lowered, recreational users will be able to paddle canoes and kayaks from the dam through Hitchens Pond, though the channel will be narrower and more obstructions will be visible. ....

According to the Ausable River Association, Mirror Lake in Lake Placid iced over on December 11th, and ice-out was last Friday - 114 days - that’s 12 days sooner than the average of their records. Apr 16, 2021 Water levels in a St. Lawrence County pond will be lowered to investigate a leak in a dam. The NY Department of Environmental Conservation is lowering the water levels at the Lower Bog River Dam in the town of Piercefield near Tupper Lake. The DEC says the dam has leaks in the concrete training wall. The lower dam road is currently closed due to mud season. DEC officials estimate that after the water is lowered recreational users will be able to canoers and kayaks will be able to paddle through the dam up into the nearby Hitchens Pond. ....
