Rand report: Rand bounces back alongside emerging market correction
(Partner Content) In the past few weeks, emerging market currencies have been under pressure, fueled by rising concerns over global inflation.
Progress towards the release of Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus package, coupled with lower-than-expected US unemployment claims, has contributed to these concerns and the possibility of rate hikes has caused investors to shy away from emerging market pairs.
Last week, however, the rand mustered up some resilience and fought back against the previous risk sell-off. The USD/ZAR pair ended the week down 2.71%, as the rand regained some of its previous losses. Moving predominantly on US data, the rand benefitted from manageable Consumer Price Index (CPI), which came in 0.1% lower than expected.
