Poet Hajjar Baban Receives Soros Fellowship for New Americans

Hajjar Baban’s experience as an immigrant to America exists in all aspects of her work, she says, from “the words that I may obsess over to images that become motifs.”
Baban – who received a bachelor’s degree in creative writing from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 2020 and is currently a Master of Fine Arts student in in the University of Virginia’s Creative Writing Program in poetry – was awarded the Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans, a merit-based award to support graduate study for immigrants and children of immigrants. Founded by Hungarian immigrants Daisy M. Soros and her late husband Paul Soros, the fellowship program honors the contributions of continuing generations of immigrants in the United States. ....

Baban has been named one of 30 recipients of a 2021 Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans, a merit-based graduate school program for immigrants and children of immigrants. She was chosen from a pool of 2,445 applicants, the most in the program’s history. ....

I lost my other Margy last week.
When I moved back to Kingsport in 2002 to take care of my mother, Margie Staten, I reconnected with my old friend Margy Clark, who had been a treasured colleague during my first stint at the Kingsport Times News in the mid-seventies.
Margy â different spelling from my mother â was recently widowed and we became running mates, again.
We would have dinner together once a week, always at a different spot. We talked about putting together a book of restaurant reviews of Tri-Cities restaurants but in the end we decided we would rather enjoy our meals than critique them. ....

All Things Are Possible: Poetry prize hopes to inspire Scotland's older generations

WHEN it comes to aging, sometimes the publishing world can appear more cut-throat than a beauty pageant.
Many prizes single out those under 40 or 30 as though those were peaks to reach and not promising beginnings. While it’s important to nurture talent, particularly in those marginalised and bereft of the material securities behind some careers, it can convey the impression that taking more swings around the sun before you write is some kind of failure.
Certainly, that’s how I felt sheepishly committing myself to study writing in my 40s and being reassured by one classmate that it was OK, I looked younger, must be the yoga. In truth, it was more likely the zits, but I was supposed to take it as a complement. At least grease don’t crease. ....
