Bare-chested
The girls huddle
unaware
wrangle tree trunks into submission.
Chainsaw, axe, and brawn
like Sunday’s next door neighbor
ready to claim today.
on the perpetually transforming banks of the Jack’s Pass River.
The woman
tucks stories into her pages
as sustenance for the coming Winter.
We all have our rituals.

Surely they can’t survive
Too many in the same small pond
The large Spaghetti O lips, hungry for air
Opening and closing,
Sounds like naked thighs slapping together.
Most ignore the spectacle.

Lawn Mower Memories
To me they were
Designed to betray, frustrate
To mow our sizeable lawn

Always some dirt- and oil-encrusted
Prehistoric jury-rigged Frankenstein

My 3-step starting routine proved successful
1) Laborious hand-cranking
Including, but not limited to, slipping gears,
Jamming blades or reels
And decreased hope

Defeated and exhausted
Mired in the vibrant green bog
That our pasturage had become
Only the Gods of Mowing can know
I’d estimate hundreds, possibly thousands
Of wasted, clipping- littered afternoons
Dotting the days of my wasted youth

Yet never actually said to me
(“I can’t get it started again” really means ....
