Area man swims a mile for his 80th birthday, raises more than $4,000

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. For most people, swimming a mile for fun, might not be all that fun.
But for Jack Poulson’s 80th birthday, it’s
all he wanted to do.
“So far I feel good,” Poulson told News 3 Now in the middle of his mile Sunday morning. “This is kind of normal, doing 20 laps is kind of regular, doing 36 is going to be a major challenge, but yeah, so far I feel good.”
But 36 laps is actually going back and forth 72 times; his daughter Amanda said if he was feeling good after 72, he would push for 80 80 laps for 80 years. ....

In dangerously cold weather, pandemic preparations pay off for Madison's homeless shelters

Dane County’s homeless shelters have spent the past ten months implementing plans to prevent community spread of the COVID-19 virus through the local homeless population. Now, those same pandemic-induced adaptations are helping local shelters weather this week’s dangerous cold front.
Casey Becker, Director of Dane County’s Division of Housing Access and Affordability, says that the city and county spent most of 2020 preparing to expand homeless service into additional space if it became necessary.
“So when the cold came, we had already had practice in finding these temporary spaces and finding additional capacity,” she says.
Becker says that – in preparation for this week’s cold – local officials began moving some homeless residents into hotels. That strategy was initially intended for a different use: quarantining homeless people with a higher risk of contracting COVID-19. ....

Q&A: Porchlight's Kim Sutter has seen COVID-19 galvanize support for homeless services

Kim Sutter serves as director of services for of Porchlight Inc., a Madison nonprofit organization that provides services to the homeless community. Earlier this week, Porchlight unveiled a new temporary menâs homeless shelter that is expected to serve up to 250 people a night.Â
Sutter, who grew up in Beaver Dam and majored in social work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has been working with the homeless community for over 12 years.Â
What was your path to working with the homeless? What motivated you to go into this work?Â
I started at Porchlight s Safe Haven program, pretty much right out of school. Safe Haven is our day shelter for individuals with mental illness. I worked there for eight years, and took over as manager of that program, and did that for several years. In 2016, I was promoted to director of services. ....

Bre Loughlin and Tracy Zvenyach had 39 years of nursing experience between them when the COVID-19 pandemic started. Zvenyach, a registered nurse with a Ph.D. in health policy who teaches nursing students at Georgetown University as an assistant professor, spent the past decade working first on Capitol Hill and then for a pharmaceutical company. Loughlin was an executive at Epic Systems Corp. until May 2020, where she’d launched five products in eight years on the clinical informatics team. Before that, she’d been a front line nurse. The two have been neighbors and close friends for years. ....
