Maryland approves gas pipeline, saying switch to total renewable energy will be incremental


Despite setbacks and cancellations to some high-profile natural gas pipelines, a project on the Delmarva Peninsula has overcome strong resistance to gain the go-ahead from Maryland officials.

The Board of Public Works, presided over by Gov. Larry Hogan, on Jan. 27 unanimously approved a permit allowing Delaware-based Chesapeake Utilities to bore under three waterways. The company is extending an 8-inch-diameter pipeline 11 miles into Somerset County from existing lines in Wicomico County and southern Delaware.
The state signed a contract with the company in 2019 to supply natural gas to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, which currently relies on fuel oil and propane, and the Eastern Correctional Institution, which uses wood chips. Maryland Board of Public Works (BPW) on Dec. 9 approved funding of more than $100 million toward major projects to protect the supply of drinking water for customers in the Baltimore region.
In addition, the new monies will be used to improve wastewater infrastructure in Baltimore City and Baltimore County to prevent sewage overflows and backups into homes and businesses.
One of the approved projects concerned improvements in the electrical system reliability at the Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant in Baltimore.
A grant of more than $63 million will help fund the construction of electrical improvements that are essential to support the operation of the Back River plant s headworks project, which will provide wet weather storage to protect treatment processes and relieve restrictions to reduce sewage backups and overflows. ....

BPW OKs Extra Funds To Modify Purple Line Contract

Maryland leaders on Wednesday approved a plan to allocate an additional $250 million for the Purple Line, a massive light rail project running east to west in Prince George s and Montgomery counties.

The Board of Public Works voted unanimously to approve the Hogan administration s $250 million settlement with Purple Line Transit Partners, the collection of firms building the oft-delayed transit line. The vote brings the total state outlay for the project to $5.8 billion ― and a $100 million first installment of the settlement will be paid out to the transit consortium before the end of the year.
The state has officially taken over day-to-day management of the project, which runs from New Carrollton to Bethesda, and 14 different contractors are continuing to work on different phases of the construction, Transportation Secretary Greg Slater told the board members ― Gov.
