Despite the increasing foreign investment in many African economies, their participation in trade, and the economic growth that follows from it, structural transformation has remained limited.
Kasper Vrolijk takes a look at Ethiopia’s industrial policy and argues that the government has failed to
sufficiently emphasize innovation in and technology transfer to domestic firms, leading to minimal “upgrading” of low to high value-added activities.

Global demand for construction materials has risen substantially over the past decades. To keep global warming below 2°C, demand for steel and cement must peak by 2030 and fall below 2010 levels by 2070. The construction industry must make longer-lasting buildings and substitute low-carbon materials for high-carbon ones.

Simon Dietz(Transition Pathway Initiative, at LSE’s Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment) write that the circular economy should be adopted as a comprehensive approach incorporated into each stage of these materials’ life cycles. Over the past 25 years, Spain has undergone a striking convergence between women’s and men’s participation in the labour market. While in the early 1990s only 50 women were active in the labour market for every 100 men, this had risen to 88 active women for every 100 active males by 2019. The rapid incorporation of women into the workforce has meant that the participation rate of women in Spain has now overtaken that in the European Union overall. ....
