The Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s eviction moratorium has expired meaning hundreds of residents face evictions in the lowcountry.
The Beaufort County courts system tells WJCL that they have 82 pending evictions. This includes people who were impacted by the moratorium. In Chatham County, there are 536 pending evictions. Advertisement
Several local organizations have seen an increase in people applying for aid programs, including the United Way and Economic Opportunity Authority.
“They have several different programs and pots of money and opportunities to help assist families with both rental assistance and utility assistance,” said Vice President of the United Way Jennifer Darsey. “There are families that are struggling with very unique situations and circumstances that not one household is cookie cutter so that no one solution will be the solution for all families and individuals and households.”
