Feeding concentrate to freshly-calved dairy cows
Dairy farmers should aim to feed a 15% crude protein concentrate ration to freshly calved dairy cows, according to Teagasc nutritionist Joe Patton.
“Ingredients must be of the highest quality. A typical ratio would comprise an equal mix of a high-quality cereal: maize or barley; fibre: hulls or beet pulp and protein: distillers or soya,” he said.
“Minerals must also be included: calmag; salt; limestone; maybe a bit of phosphorous and trace elements. The mineral component of the ration will stay the same, irrespective of the other components used.”
Patton made these comments during a recent Teagasc Dairy Edge podcast. ....

Stocking density versus national milk output: What is the proper balance?

Given the environmental constraints coming down the track for the Irish milk sector, scientists at University College Dublin (UCD) Lyons Dairy Education and Research Facility have been seeking an answer to the fundamental question: is it feasible to maintain Ireland’s current milk output from a reduced number of cows?
The last five years have seen staff at the Lyons facility monitoring the performance of a bespoke herd of 60 high Economic Breeding Index (EBI) cows, managed specifically to allow the aforementioned issue to be addressed.
The results generated by the project to date, which is about to enter its sixth and final year, were the focal point of a recent webinar. The event was hosted by members of the UCD research team, all of whom are involved with the Lyons Systems herd. ....

EBI can be used successfully in high output dairy herds

Economic Breeding Index (EBI) can be used as an effective herd management tool across all dairy production scenarios, according to University College Dublin’s (UCD’s) associate professor of agriculture, Alan Fahey.
Speaking at a recent webinar, held to profile the results achieved by the Lyons’ Systems herd over the past five years, Fahey pointed out that two cows with the same overall EBI value could deliver two entirely different levels of performance.
One could be particularly high in terms of milk output, the other could be very high, where fertility is concerned.
“Overall EBI values reflect the sum of several different performance-related traits. So it’s important for farmers to examine the differing component values within the overall EBI, when it comes to making the breeding decisions that best meet the specific needs of their herds.” ....
