Former Los Lunas Schools Board of Education member assumes interim role; PED secretary seeks nominations for additional designees

A former Los Lunas Board of Education member has been named as the public education secretaryâs first designee to assume temporary governance of the Los Lunas Schools district.
New Mexico Public Education Secretary Ryan Stewart announced Sonya CâMoya as his first designee today, Friday, May 28, in a press release.
In the same press release, Stewart called for applications for additional designees for the other four districts. CâMoya will represent District 2.
On Wednesday, May 26,
Stewart indefinitely suspended the districtâs five-member elected board due to what PED described as âcredible evidenceâ that certain board members have persistently violated procurement and public access laws, the state Public School Code and professional ethical standards. ....

The entire Los Lunas school board has been suspended indefinitely, according to officials with the New Mexico Public Education Department.
According to the release, there is “credible evidence” that several members of the five-person elected board have violated procurement and public access laws, the state Public School Code and professional ethical standards. Sign up for our Newsletters
“The conduct of certain Los Lunas School Board members is antithetical to these standards and has impeded the ability of the board as a whole to act as it should,” Public Education Secretary Ryan Stewart wrote. “This conduct has created a sense of instability and ethical ambiguity that negatively impacts all aspects of the district’s operations and that severely impairs the educational process in the district.” ....

LOS LUNAS â All five members of a local elected board have been indefinitely suspended from office by a state agency due to a litany of findings in its most recent audit.
The New Mexico Public Education Department announced Wednesday, May 26, all five members of the Los Lunas Schools Board of Education have been suspended.
âThe entire Los Lunas school board has been suspended due to credible evidence that certain members have persistently violated procurement and public access laws, the state Public School Code, and professional ethical standards,â according to a press release sent out by PED today.
