/ After four-and-a-half years leading the Houston Police Department, Art Acevedo has stepped down to take the role of top cop in Miami. Longtime HPD officer Troy Finner is the current chief. Ahead of Finner s swearing-in ceremony, Acevedo removed his badge and pinned it onto Finner s uniform.
In recent months, five of the largest cities in Texas have seen their top cop leave. The reasons for their exits are varied. But one thing is known: The average tenure for some big-city chiefs in Texas is in decline.
Troy Finner, a 30-year veteran of the Houston Police Department, became HPD’s new leader this April. That makes Finner the fourth new big-city police chief appointed in Texas since January. Finner was preceded by Al Jones in Arlington, Eddie Garcia in Dallas and Neil Noakes in Fort Worth.
Pensacola s national police chief search down to three candidates
The finalists are:
John Ortolano, chief of police of Hobbs Police Department in Hobbs, New Mexico
Eric Randall, assistant chief of police at Newport News Police Department in Newport News, Virginia
Pensacola hired Public Sector Search & Consulting Inc. to conduct a nationwide search for Lyter s replacement. The search resulted in the selection of eight final candidates, who then were ranked by a city selection committee. The top three candidates chosen by the committee will participate in a public candidate forum, as well as an interview with city officials.
Pensacola Mayor Grover Robinson will ultimately make the final selection for who to name as chief, and the Pensacola City Council will vote on whether to approve the hire.

Police Chief Erika Shields stepped from one inferno straight into another. After one of her officers fatally shot a Black man in a Wendy’s parking lot, she resigned from the Atlanta Police Department and applied to just one new force: Louisville, where the fatal police shooting of Breonna Taylor during an early-morning raid had roiled the country and transformed the city into an epicenter of last year’s protests.
