Civil servants earning between €70,000 and €150,000 will have their full pay restored from July 1, after Cabinet members signed off on the measures.
These civil servants have been on reduced pay since 2008 when, under the Financial Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Act (Fempi), their salaries were cut. ....

The mandatory hotel quarantine system will also be extended.
Emergency pandemic legislation including additional Gardaí powers and the extension of the mandatory hotel quarantine system have been extended until 9 Nov under a request made by Health Minister Stephen Donnelly.

A Government spokesman told RTÉ News that Minister Donnelly felt it was in the public interest to keep the measures in place. The legislation was due to run out on 9 June.
According to the publication, the Cabinet decision will go back to the Oireachtas as soon as possible for confirmation.
The Health and Criminal Justice Bill of 2021 was brought to Cabinet on Tuesday as Minister Donnelly got approval from Ministers to extend the laws. ....

Extraordinary powers have been given to the state during this pandemic. Young people up and down the country, but especially in working-class communities, are reporting an increased level of harassment by guards, Barry said.
The Policing Authority in its latest report says young people were reported as believing that Covid-19 has been used by gardaí as an excuse to conduct more stops. The same report said that student groups described policing in the state as intimidating and negative.
It is a fact that more than 50% of Covid fines have been handed out to those aged between 18 and 25.  It is also a fact that we have seen very heavy-handed policing in recent weeks against protests, not least against the Debenhams workers. ....
