Covid-19 cases hit record highs in Southampton schools


Parents reassured as Covid-19 cases hit record highs in Southampton
PARENTS have been reassured as the number of schools with confirmed cases in Southampton hit record highs.
In the week of July 12-18, educational settings in the city recorded 201 positive Covid-19 cases, the highest number since data was first collected on this back in November 2020.
The list, which can be found on the city council website, shows that the number of cases began to steadily increase after June 7-13 when only one case was recorded in the whole week.
As well as this, between July 10 and July 20, 138 schools across Hampshire County Council’s remit recorded at least one positive case, more than double the numbers that were being recorded in June. ....

Southampton reopens after 16 months of Covid rules


RESIDENTS have been advised to act responsibly and “stay safe” as Southampton reopens.
As of today, the country has reached step four of the Government’s roadmap out of lockdown meaning that rules like face mask wearing and social distancing are no longer mandatory.
After 16 months of restrictions, Southampton and Hampshire is opening up again with clubs and events able to start back up.
But residents have been advised to stay safe as infections continue to rise across the country.
Dr Debbie Chase, Director of Public Health at Southampton City Council, said: “Today marks a significant milestone for Southampton in almost 16 months with the lifting of COVID-19 legal restriction. ....

More than one in four Southampton care home staff have not had Covid jab


MORE than a quarter of Southampton care home staff are not vaccinated against Covid-19, new data has shown.
NHS figures show that 910 out of 1,278 eligible care home staff had received a first dose by April 11, meaning 29 per cent are still yet to get a jab.
This is a reduction of three per cent from March 11 when 32 per cent of staff were still yet to be vaccinated.
In the rest of Hampshire 12,057 out of 14,372 eligible staff, including agency workers, at older adult care homes had received a first dose by April 11, according to latest NHS figures – meaning 16% have not had a jab. ....

Symptom-free tests play 'key role' in Southampton schools


Symptom-free Lateral Flow Tests were used to detect 69 Covid-19 cases in city schools.
SYMPTOM-FREE testing played a “key role” in reducing the spread of Covid-19 in Southampton schools, data has shown.
Prior to Easter, symptom-free Lateral Flow Tests detected nearly half the confirmed Covid-19 cases in Southampton’s education settings.
Between March 8, when the majority of pupils returned to school, and the end of term on April 1, there were 142 confirmed cases of Covid-19 according to data from Southampton City Council.
A total of 69 of these were detected using Lateral Flow testing, with the other 62 being confirmed using PCR tests, which are normally used for people showing symptoms. ....
