(Bloomberg) The U.S. faces a steep uphill struggle in gearing up to monitor Covid-19 variants, a key part of watching for the emergence of dangerous mutations that might spread quickly, evade vaccines or kill more infected people.

Other countries, such as the U.K., have established robust, nationwide surveillance programs to identify new Covid genomes and track the spread of existing ones. But the U.S. has not: It ranks 32nd in the world for the number of sequences completed per 1,000 Covid cases, according to data from GISAID, a global database where researchers share new genomes. ....

New strain of the coronavirus comes to Georgia

With the new year came a new strain of the coronavirus, which wasÂ first found in BritainÂ and named B.1.1.7. It entered the United States on Dec. 29, 2020, and was found in Georgia on Jan. 5.
The Georgia Department of Public Health announced the first case of B.1.1.7 on Jan. 5, which was found in an 18-year-old male with no travel history. There is still only one known case of the new strain in Georgia.
According to the DPH, the new variant is âsignificantlyâ more contagious than the original virus, but there is no evidence that the new strain causes more severe illness or increased risk of death. ....
