While it was not in dispute that dozens of animals died because of starvation on National Assembly Speaker Thandi Modise s North West farm, a court has found she cannot be held responsible.
On Friday, Modise appeared in the Potchefstroom Regional Court, where she was found not guilty on six charges relating to the dozens of animals that died or were found emaciated on her farm in the North West in 2014, while she was still the province s premier.
More than 50 pigs and several other animals, including sheep, chickens and geese, were already dead when the National Council of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) first inspected the farm. A further 224 animals had to be put down, News24 previously reported. ....

Thandi Modise has pleaded not guilty to six charges of animal cruelty. She is accused of causing the deaths of 79 animals on her property.
Thandi Modise, speaker of the National Assembly in Parliament, is back in Potchefstroom Regional Court on six charges of animal cruelty.
The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (NSPCA) filed charges against Modise after it found scores of dead animals on her North West farm back in 2014. The organisation has roped in Afriforum to pursue a private prosecution against the speaker.

The NSPCA has expressed extreme disappointment and instructed its Afriforum legal team to appeal the judgment.
The Potchefstroom Regional Court in North West has acquitted Thandi Modise (National Assembly Speaker) of all charges of animal cruelty brought against her.
The case dates back to 2014 when dozens of dead animals were found on Modise s farm outside Potchefstroom when she was still premier of North West.
She was charged with six counts of animal cruelty related to the farm animals that died and others found in an emaciated condition. ....
