Grafton is a cost-effective location to visit in Southern Utah


If you’re thinking of visiting Zion National Park this summer but want something unique to Utah and less crowded, there is a place not too far from the park. 
Grafton Ghost Town is just outside the nearby town of Rockville and is easily missed due to its hard-to-find location and only one sign leading visitors to it. However, it s free and open 24 hours.
Grafton was settled in 1859 and became a ghost town in 1945. It was the early Mormon Pioneers who settles in Grafton and at its height, it had 168 families there. The pioneers grew cotton at the height of the Civil War in Grafton.   ....

Shivwits Band, Other Researchers Are Learning More About Desert Tortoises Through Field Work And Collecting Stories


Pika aya means tortoise in the Shivwits dialect of Southern Paiute.
Southern Paiute land in Washington County could hold some important information about Mojave Desert tortoises. To learn more, researchers are taking a holistic approach to studying this endangered animal.
The project is called Pika’aya Tooveep or “Tortoise Country” in Paiute. Part of the endeavor involves students and wildlife biologists surveying the Shivwits Band of Paiute Indians reservation for signs of tortoises, which isn’t usually allowed.
Ann McLuckie is a biologist with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources. She said the land on either side of the reservation is an important recovery area for the tortoises. Surveying the animals on the reservation will help them understand how much movement there is between the two areas. ....

Hoopa and Karuk Tribes Get Millions in Affordable Housing Grants

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has granted more than $90 million to 24 Native American Tribes and Tribally Designated Housing Entities (TDHEs) across the nation, including the North Coast s Hoopa and Karuk tribes, to support new housing construction, housing rehabilitation and critical infrastructure projects.
The Hoopa Valley Tribe received $5 million, while the Karuk Tribe was awarded $2 million.
“This past year was a stark reminder of just how important access to safe, stable housing is especially in Tribal communities disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Secretary Marcia L. Fudge. “The funding HUD is awarding today will support much needed affordable housing investments in Indian Country.” ....
