Yes The UCP government announced in a tweet on Thursday that all seniors in assisted living facilities in the Calgary zone have now been vaccinated. “All Albertans living in long-term care and supportive living in the Calgary zone have received their first round of vaccination.” The tweet singled out the situation for the Calgary zone and there are still no details about the South zone. “Work is underway in the South Zone. We expect to have provided vaccines to all long-term care and designated supportive living sites in the province by the week of January 18,” said Tom McMillan, communications Alberta Health. “As with Calgary, we will alert Albertans when immunization in the South Zone is complete.” ....
Premier Jason Kenney announced on Twitter that a woman at a seniors’ residence in Medicine Hat received the COVID vaccine on Wednesday. “Alberta has just given our 1st long-term care resident the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. Sheila is a resident at Riverview Care Centre in Medicine Hat. She was once an avid dancer until a stroke & 2 heart attacks slowed her dance moves but couldn’t slow her spirit,” reads Kenney’s tweet. Medicine Hat received 975 doses of the Moderna vaccine and Dr. Byron Hirsch was the first person to get one of those on Dec. 23. Neither Alberta Health Services nor Alberta Health would say on Wednesday how many of the 975 doses have been administered so far. ....
Premier Jason Kenney tweeted the news on Wednesday morning. Last week, Dr. Byron Hirsch was the first person vaccinated in Medicine Hat. Hirsch is a family physician who’s worked with seniors in long-term care and supportive living for the past 10 years. In a statement from AHS, the 63-year-old doctor says being part of the first round of front-line workers to receive the vaccine gives him hope that it will start to control the spread of COVID-19 in long-term care. He hopes by showing himself receiving the vaccine that he can set an example for staff who may be reluctant to take it themselves. “There are all kinds of theories out there,” he says, “but the sooner we can get a large volume of people vaccinated, the quicker we can get out of the restrictions in long-term care facilities.” ....
