The Evolution of Jamaican Music: From Revivalism to Reggae (Part II)

Part II – ROCKSTEADY
Rocksteady was the Jamaican musical genre that succeeded ska, growing in popularity in the late 1960s. The late Hopeton Lewis one of the foremost rocksteady singers in 1968 and whose song “Take it Easy” was one of the more popular hits of the era had said, “The music and the dance needed to simmer down after the high energy of ska. The replacement was rocksteady, which was cool and easy.”
The successor to ska and precursor to reggae, rocksteady was performed by several Jamaican vocal harmony groups such as The Gaylads, The Maytals, The Heptones, and The Paragons, as well as individual artists like Lewis and Alton Ellis. ....

The Evolution of Jamaican Music: From Revivalism to Reggae (Part I)

[Many thanks to Peter Jordens.]
Jamaica is traditionally described as the “land of wood and water,” but that description would be more accurate, as the “the land of wood, water and music.” Music, and dance, have been a part of Jamaica’s history dating back to slavery serving as expressions of faith, hope, resistance, love, romance, and national pride. Over the years, Jamaican music has evolved from its traditional roots that included gospel, pocomania, quadrill, dinki mini, and Zion revival music. Influenced by the African culture from which enslaved people in Jamaica originated, the music throughout the early years featured heavy use of drums, and wind instruments like bamboo flutes. ....

The Mighty Sparrow | G98.7FM

The Mighty Sparrow
Slinger Francisco, also known as The Mighty Sparrow, is a Caribbean icon.
Many words can describe him: performer, songwriter, prophet, satirist, and historian. He took the purely Caribbean sound of calypso and introduced it to the world. He definitely deserves the title, “Calypso King of the World.”
Sparrow was born on July 9, 1935 in Grand Roy, Grenada. His father, a carpenter, moved to Trinidad to earn a better living. The rest of the family joined him before Sparrow was two years old. They lived in Port of Spain.
Sparrow loved to sing from a young age. He sang in the weekly Friday concerts while attending Newtown Boys Catholic School but stayed away from calypso because it was considered unhealthy.  ....

On the Many Meanings of Black Diaspora

Black Diaspora
Louis Chude-Sokei: “It was accents and curses, uncles and aunties, cousins and endless trips to Western Union.”
February 3, 2021
Diaspora was one of those words from my mother’s “word of the month” or “word of the week” subscriptions. What made it stick out was that I heard it repeated around the table. The word meant the scattering of a people across different lands and countries and languages. To me, this meaning seemed immediate, oppressively intimate. It wasn’t just about the Middle Passage and slavery in the New World. It wasn’t even about our more specific migration from Africa to Jamaica to America. It was accents and curses, uncles and aunties, cousins and endless trips to Western Union, and obligations of all kinds. Diaspora was mapped across the plates of ackee and saltfish ....
