Summer is fast approaching, but the Sandwich Recreation Department is struggling to fill job openings, including a medical position that is required to run the department s popular camp program. Director Guy Boucher said the department is slated to staff lifeguard towers and beach parking lot gates on Friday, June 25. He said a handful of lifeguards are returning from last year, but between six and eight more people are needed. Not having more lifeguards could mean that one of the town s three ponds will not be guarded, he said. Attracting lifeguards has been difficult in many towns for the past few years, Mr. Boucher said. However, the pandemic has meant that lifeguard certification programs have been on hold, hampering the certification and recertification of lifeguards and making the hiring situation even worse ....
Closing three of the townâs freshwater ponds to nonresidents and postponing Fourth of July fireworks until the fall are among the recommendations made to the Sandwich Board of Selectmen Thursday, February 25. The suggestions for another COVID-safe summer came from the town department officials whose employees oversee summer activitiesâRecreation Director Guy Boucher, Natural Resources Director David J. DeConto and Harbormaster Michael Dunning.
