The Lamb and Lion in High Petergate is set to be renamed The Fat Badger. A planning application has been submitted by the owners to rebrand the pub and guesthouse next to Bootham Bar. The group that owns the pub also runs another venue called The Fat Badger in Harrogate. Under the plans the signs will be replaced, the front of the pub will be repainted, new lights installed outside, vinyls put on the windows and chalkboards put up. Inside the pub the bar will be replaced, furniture renewed and the bathrooms redecorated. A planning statement says: The property comprises of two grade II-listed buildings, numbers 2 and 2A which was a house and shop circa 1840 and number 4, a house that was constructed in 1782, formerly the Bootham Bar Hotel.
Things to do in York
If the weather’s good, climb up to the City’s walls. These are divided across four sections, and offer sweeping views of inside and outside the city. Alternatively, you can take to the water, and go on a river cruise tour along the Ouse - there are many riverboat tours available.
The Shambles, a winding network of medieval streets, are full of cafes, tearooms and boutiques to explore. Unmissable is the city’s staggeringly beautiful thirteenth-century cathedral York Minster - if you time your visit around Evensong each evening, you’ll have a truly magical experience. Kids will love the Jorvik Viking Centre, an immersive recreation of life in Dark Age, Dane-occupied York. If you fancy a more leftfield historical experience, then the Cold War Bunker on the outskirts of town is a perfectly preserved subterranean nuclear bunker that dates back to days of the ticking Doomsday Clock – unfortunately, though, this is temporarily closed, but make sure to check
CELEBRITY chef Gregg Wallace s recent visit to York will be airing on national TV next week. Gregg was spotted out and about in the city in December, filming for his new Channel 5 series Greg Wallace s Big Weekend Away. And the York leg of his travels will be broadcast next Friday (March 5). The MasterChef judge was spotted filming in York for the show just before Christmas. During his three-day visit he took in the Minster, walked the city walls, and learned about the life of Guy Fawkes. He also delved into York s ancient history, finding out about the Romans, the Vikings, and the city s favourite medieval and Tudor kings.
