The Centennial State is also home to reddish-orange rock formations, flat-topped mesas, rolling meadows dotted with wildflowers, crystal-clear alpine lakes, golden-yellow aspen groves, rocky alpine tundras, narrow canyons, and grass-covered prairies. Hiking is one of the best ways to experience Coloradoâs varied terrainâthanks to the more than 39,000 miles of trails of varying lengths, difficulty levels, and scenery spread across the state. Jim Thompson, 80, of Pine did a 10-hour rim-to-rim hike of the Grand Canyon May 15. This is not his first speed hike of the natural wonder. Thompson has traversed the canyon seven times since he was 70 following hip replacement surgery. He did an 8-hour night, nonstop rim-to-rim North Rim to South Rim Grand Canyon 22-mile hike at age 75 and again at 76. Thompsonâs first major Grand Canyon hike was in 1999, when he was 58. Accompanied by his wife Sue, then 54, he did the Rim to Rim to Rim â South Rim on South Kaibab trail to North Rim on North Kaibab trail â 21 miles nonstop and a day later North Rim to South Rim, 21 miles nonstop. ....
Hike the FXK Trail What: The Francis X. Kennedy Ski trail is one of Tiadaghton State Forest’s most northern trails, and is named after the late former district manager, Francis Kennedy, who was a combat wounded WWII veteran and member of the infamous 10th Mountain Division. Under his management, the first cross-country ski trails on State Forest Land were created in the early 1970s. Come along as we hike this moderate 4.6-mile loop trail. Registration required.
