Senate passes anti-Asian hate crime bill 94-1 - with Republican Josh Hawley casting the only opposition vote
The Senate passed an anti-discrimination bill to address the rise in hate crimes against Asians in the U.S. by wide, bipartisan margins Thursday afternoon
The vote was 94-1, with only Missouri Republican Josh Hawley voting against the measure 
The bill directs the DOJ and HHS to issue new guidance on the rise in violence against Asians amid the coronavirus pandemic 
It now heads to the Democrat-led House, where it s also expected to pass 
The vote is the latest move the federal government has made to reverse what President Joe Biden considers to be the misdeeds of the last administration  ....

A longitudinal look into anti-Asian hate incidents on campus and in the U.S.

The mass shooting that left six Asian women dead in Atlanta, Ga. last month captured headlines and shook Asian communities across the country amid a reported rise in anti-Asian violence since the pandemic began.
But anti-Asian hate violence did not begin with COVID-19. The Daily’s Data Team analyzed hate incidents against Asians at Stanford and across the nation in the years leading to and during the pandemic. 
The number of reported hate incidents at Stanford campus targeting Asians jumped from 2018 to 2019, the year before the pandemic hit, according to The Daily’s analysis. A preliminary compilation of last year’s data, which is yet to be fully gathered and published, indicates a lower number of reported hate incidents against Asians in 2020.  ....

Heightened apprehension among Asians in the US

THERE is a general climate of heightened apprehension and concern among Asians, including Malaysians, in the United States following increased Asian hate in the country after the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak, observes Elina Noor (pic), who is Director of Political-Security Affairs at the Asia Society Policy Institute, Washington DC.
In response to rising anti-Asian racism, Elina notes that the Biden administration has taken steps to recognise and address the situation.
