An attack by gunmen on two Chinese workers in Pakistan on July 28 is the latest in a string of incidents that has left Beijing reevaluating how best to protect its citizens and interests in the country, which has become strategically important as the centerpiece of its multibillion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
The most recent incident happened in the port city of Karachi, where gunmen on a motorbike opened fire on a car carrying the Chinese men, which sent them to the hospital with serious bullet wounds, RFE/RL s Radio Mashaal reported. ....

Islamabad [Pakistan], July 19 (ANI): While Islamabad is being slammed over the kidnapping and assault of the Afghan envoy s daughter, Pakistan Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed tried to evade the responsibility by terming the horrific incident an international conspiracy .
Despite the Afghan government s sharp response against the kidnapping, the Pakistani minister went on to claim that the daughter of the Afghan envoy wasn t kidnapped at all .
Speaking on Geo News programme Naya Pakistan on Sunday, Ahmed said the investigation carried out so far had not shown that the woman was abducted. ....

The last remaining US soldiers stationed at the Bagram Air Base, once the symbol of US presence in Afghanistan, returned home on Friday July 2, just in time to spend the fourth of July weekend with their families. The transfer of the airfield – just 40 miles to the north of Kabul – to Afghan forces marks the virtual end of the longest war in American history.
After this drawdown, approximately 650 US soldiers are expected to remain in Afghanistan with the limited mission of protecting the US embassy and Kabul’s international airport.
In order to allay the fears that the United States was abandoning Afghanistan and to reassure the Afghans that the United States would continue to back them even after the pullout, President Biden hosted an Oval Office meeting, on June 25, with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah, Chairman of the High Council for National Reconciliation. ....
