This Icelandic Town Wants An Oscar And More Tourists—And It May Get Both

This Icelandic Town Wants An Oscar And More Tourists—And It May Get Both Share to Facebook ASSOCIATED PRESS Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, starring Will Ferrell and Rachel McAdams, has been nominated for exactly one Academy Award and nobody is more excited than the residents of a sleepy little town in Iceland. The real-life Icelandic fishing town of Húsavík (pop. 2,300), where the film is set, has launched a clever grassroots YouTube campaign for the power ballad “Húsavík (My Hometown),” which is up for “Best Original Song.” Having adopted the song as a local anthem, the town has created a series of videos that are charmingly silly and self-deprecating, just like the film. Húsavík’s fictional mayor, Óskar Óskarsson (played by actor Sigurdur Illugason) shows folks around town and expresses his hope that the song will win on Oscar night.
