Black nurses bring vaccine to community centers, churches to target under-served people

Less than 2 percent of people who have been vaccinated in San Diego County are Black, data show
Black residents make up nearly 5 percent of the county’s population and account for 4,875 cases per 100,000 residents. That’s higher than rates among White and Asian residents but lower than rates among Latinos and Pacific Islanders.
The county has said it is placing vaccination sites in areas with large minority populations that have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic.

The county operates vaccination superstations in La Jolla, Chula Vista, La Mesa, San Marcos and Del Mar as well as some smaller operations. Its first mass immunization site near Petco Park will close permanently Saturday. ....

San Diego Nurses Push to Get Black and Latino Residents Vaccinated

Five-Hundred vaccine doses were given during Sunday s clinic. Among the recipients was Francine Howell.
“I want to travel, but I’m still kind of scared but at least I’m vaccinated,” said Howell.
There are several factors that have led to low rates of vaccinations in the Black and Latino communities. Among them is access to technology and transportation.
“It’s everything because you have people who can’t get around. You have people who don’t have transportation and if you have to drive out to La Jolla or something to get a shot it’s not gonna happen,” said Webb. ....
