By Savanna Tomei Wisconsin SHARE JANESVILLE, Wis. Hundreds of teachers were vaccinated Friday, in one of Wisconsin’s first mass clinics for educators. Candy Clough taught in the Beloit School District for more than 20 years. She recently came out of retirement to teach online. Rise Virtual Academy typically teaches about 300 students, but with the pandemic, their enrollment is up to 3,000. Candy Clough is one of hundreds of teachers who were vaccinated at Mercyhealth on Friday, Jan. 22. “I have this teacher thing,” says Candy Clough. “It’s hard to get rid of, it must be in my blood.” She just got her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on Friday. ....
BELOIT The Lincoln Academy, Beloitâs new public charter school, will open this fall with a sixth gradeâspace for 50 more childrenâto ensure students are prepared for higher-level courses in high school. The new school, which is still under construction at 608 Henry Ave., will start enrolling students Feb. 1. Original plans called for the academy to have 4K through second grades and seventh through ninth grades in its first year. The Kids First Board of Directors approved adding a sixth grade in December, increasing the potential student body from 350 to 400 students, CEO Kristi Cole said. In a news release, Kids First Beloitâwhich is building the schoolâcited 2018-19 data from the Wisconsin Forward math exam for sixth-graders, which showed only 16.1% of all Beloit School District students were proficient in math. ....
Several Rock County school district staffs have received COVID-19 vaccinations from local health care providers or have plans to do so soon. Employees of the countyâs largest school districtsâJanesville and Beloitâare poised to receive vaccines late this week and early next week from Mercyhealth and Beloit Health System respectively, hospital representatives said. Edgerton and Parkview school districts began receiving vaccines Wednesday, district officials said. Parkview District Administrator Steve Lutzke said about 120 staff members were vaccinated by Mercyhealth system. Edgerton Superintendent Dennis Pauli said all staff who want to be vaccinated received doses Wednesday. He did not respond to The Gazetteâs questions regarding which health system the school district worked with. ....
